Putting the sun away till next summer.

Hi everyone. Finally getting around to a new blog!!! Just a bit of procrastination, but here it is.

An awesome senior, some adorable babies, a beautiful model and some unique vampire/graveyard shots!

I hope you all had a wonderful summer. I sure did!!

These next few pictures are of an incredible senior in Washington state, Abby Bos. We had so much fun doing this shoot. We shuffled all over to find the coolest spots for unique images. The picture of her holding the sun is one of my favorites.

Scott and Sandi Stuart -Happy Anniversary! 5 Years.

They look like SUPER HEROS! These are some images from their recent  studio/ beach shoot.

Here is a little  info about this amazing and inspirational couple…

Scott is a  soccer coach and personal trainer. He has led MIHS to 3 undefeated years  since he’s been with them. They are lucky to have him.

Sandy is an ER Doctor. You know how we make excuses to not exercise? We are too busy…too tired… just can’t fit it in the schedule…. well, Sandi is the perfect example that it CAN be done.

She just recently won 1st place in the Tall Class-Fitness and OVERALL FITNESS at the NPC USA Championships in S. Carolina. She now qualifies as PRO STATUS in IFBB. She made the BIG TIME along with National Sponsers and ALL.

Way to go Sandi! You go girl!!

5 years and they’ve still got “IT”.

She still has “IT”. Dang. I looked down at my own tummy, laying over my jeans… stretched out from spawning twins… sitting there looking pitiful and tired. I tell myself “it’s just baby fat…” (yah right! your girls are 12 years old!!) ok, so maybe I’ve enjoyed a meal or two… maybe someday I can be tight and hard again. I believe in miracles. Sandi, you inspire me ( and depress me just a tad…)   j.

Speaking of Inspiration!

This is Robyn DeKeyser. Dancer extraordinaire!!!

She is stunning to watch. We did a calendar for  the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation last year. Here are a few images that didn’t make it in and a couple that did.

I love this image. Dance is what drives Robyn, it is her life, her love, her passion. When she has her ballet shoes on, she is in another world. It’s magical to watch.

We shot in several different locations for the 08 calendar. This was at sunset on the rocks. Watching her dance is like watching poetry in motion. It’s breathtaking.

This was an image that we wanted to put our own spin on. People have a hard time guessing how it was shot.

I could tell you, but I’d have to kill you….

Robyn is also a SUPER HERO. She defies gravity and can balance on the tip of her toes. THAT is SUPER HERO stuff.

Family Reunion!

I am going to my family reunion this summer. It’s always colorful and lively. It’s really not complete until we have one good wrestling match, fight or  blow up with my brothers ( I have 4, count them, 4 brothers!).

I adore my family beyond words.  We are loud, opinionated, passionate, loving and funny.  We scare people, maybe scare is too harsh, we offend people. Maybe all families are like ours.

Anyhoo, I designed this family t-shirt for all of us to wear at the reunion.

 To all of you “DysFUNctional” families out there… cherish the times you have together, be patient and forgiving and love the ones that were chosen for you.

Graduating Seniors , Pregnant Moms, and  Birthday Babies!!

This is an EXCITING  time!

All across the nation seniors are graduating and heading off to new adventures. ( My own twin daughters graduated from 6th grade, reminding me how fast time flies and to make the most of our time together.)

Families are growing, expecting new arrivals!

Who knew Salad Bowls Had  So Many Uses?     

O.k., I take my precious 12 year old daughters to their weekly dance class. At the end of the class when all of the darling girls are showing the mom’s their new dance’s for the recital, in walks an old male dancer.

Now, I have nothing against male dancers, I vote equal opportunity in all things. It’s what he was wearing that disturbed me and even now might send me into therapy.

His black pantyhose were so tight  from the back,  it looked like he had gone down a water slide going 100 miles an hour… and something got lost. And DANG! when he turned around I thought he was going to knock something over, like a chair or small child. I mean, come on! I know male dancers need protection, but this literally looked like a salad bowl covering his manhood.  

The mom’s were trying to stay focused and stare at the wall or the nice doornob, but like a moth drawn to light, you can’t help but look, as disturbing as it was. 

When we got in the car, the girls didn’t say a word but had a smirk they couldn’t take off. When I said,  ”Mr. Tightpants?” they burst out in gut laughs. Words like, “gross!” “I mean come on!”  and “barf” were all spoken.

Advice to Old Male Dancers Everywhere

It’s just wrong. Unless, for some freakish reason there are low flying baseballs or falling cows in the studio, please wear a pair of sweats. We have enough things out there that we are protecting our children from.  

O.k., I will step off my soapbox now.

I wanted to say thank you to those that were able to attend. I know it was an effort for you and I appreciate the sacrifice you made to make it, it meant the world to me.

My mother, (who would rather have a root canal performed without novacaine, than get on an airplane,) flew out to Florida from Washington state. Thanks Momma and crew.

Opening Night 

February 2nd, 2009 was the opening night of my show at the King Center for the Performing Arts in Melbourne Fl. It was up for the month of February. A beautiful venue for a show!

This is 6 month old Cade Culver. He was at the March of Dimes Beach Walk this Saturday in Cape Canaveral Fl. Love the dimpled chin!

March of Dimes

What an amazing day yesterday was.The local chapter of March of Dimes Division Director-Shanna Michel and Community Director-April Gentile invited me to share a booth with the mission family, the Ganiers. What an honor.  Tim and Kally are proud parents of  their darling baby  Gavin who survived being a premie. Gavin was only 2 lbs 10 oz and had many medical problems. Through the March of Dimes his is alive and thriving today. 

The weather was perfect.  Local celebrities, DJ’s Mike and Mindy in the Morning from 99.3 were there. There were 1500 walkers that raised over $150,000. The Jazzercize girls warmed everyone up before the walk, and the mission family led the whole group of walkers on to the beach. When they returned, Publix had set up huge grills and were grilling hundreds of burgers and dogs.

There isn’t a better feeling on earth than being involved in a charity. I love babies and I love the March of Dimes! I met so many great families and charitable people and heard amazing survival stories. Shanna Michel and April Gentile did an awesome job organizing and pulling it all together. Looking forward to the Bikers for Babies Ride!!

Mother’s Love

In the picture above, Tori had reached down and picked up a cute little duckling. In the next moment this mother duck  went absolutely  ballistic  and attacked her. Imagine, without pausing for a milli-second, this mother duck went after something so huge compared to her, not thinking of her own life, just her baby’s. Such is the beauty of a mother’s love.

Mother’s Day is in 2 weeks. I was just thinking of my fabulous mother with a smile on my face. I adore her. Her humor, her compassion, her depth, intelligence and her humanness.

Being a mother makes you appreciate your own mother so much more. What I love about my momma is her PASSION for  her family and life.  I have always known  that she would gladly run in front of a bus to save one of her children. Without hesitation, she would donate a limb or an organ of her own if we needed one. She has shown her  fierce love in so many ways over the years.

 One time in high school my brother Greg had a wrestling match. We arrived late because of the snow on the roads. When we entered the meet, Greg was already on the mat wrestling. Unfortunately, he was on the bottom and screaming from the pain of his arm being torqued backwards. Before I knew it, with her coat still on, snow on her boots and purse hanging from her arm,  she power walked onto the mat screaming “LET MY BOY GO!!”  ”LET HIM GOOOO!!!!” I was beyond embarrassed, grabbed her coat and dragged her off the mat  to the bottom bleacher. Now that’s motherly love, mother duck kind of love.

I guess it could have been worse. Bev Jones, a  very large, deep voiced woman with a lazy eye (no one knew which eye to look at when you spoke to her), used to sit on the bleachers with her elbows resting on her legs, that were always ungracefully spread apart, and yell in a bellowing voice ” GRAB HIM BY THE BALLS CLARENCE!!!”  I guess that’s also motherly love.

This is my angel on earth. This picture was taken at a photography show I did at the King Center for the Performing Arts that she was brave enough to fly out for. She is my best friend, mentor, shrink, and comforter. If I loved her any more I would burst. Happy Mothers Day momma.

Tomorrow will be 5 weeks. Five weeks since the day he called from the office and said he had just been laid off.  Life as we know it will change.

I had this idea for quite some time to do a mosaic in our 6′ x 6′ entryway.  I had made a red hot chile pepper plate and thought it couldn’t be much different than that, just on a larger scale. I had the supplies sitting  for a few weeks just waiting to come to life. 

I started this project in the first week of my husband being laid off.  I pulled him into it, to help get his mind off of the pressure and stress. Together we worked to lay the  thin-set, we laid the slate, we laid the grout. We worked together sometimes in silence, in our own thoughts and sometimes talking about the possibilities. I laid the glass while he cleaned the rest of the mess.  A team. It took about 5 days to finish. It was the best therapy to help get us through the initial shock of the news. 

Having a creative outlet and making something beautiful is so therapeutic and healing.

With this being my first one, this mosaic has many mistakes. You can mosaic on so many things; the back splash in the kitchen, planters, walls, picture frames, pretty much anything that has a hard surface. You should try it yourself! I have learned that  many people don’t try new things because they say they don’t know how, or they have never done it before.  Sometimes you gotta step outside the box and just go for it. I figured the worst that could happen is that I hate the mosaic and we just scrape it off!! Just try something new that you have been wanting to do.

So many people have asked how I did this. I will show some pictures of the process.  There are classes you can take, books you can get or even go on line if you want to give it a try on your own.

This is a bad picture of the Italian glass I used. It is a beautiful variegated deep purple.

I used some buffed black river rock. In the future I wouldn’t use it again. I feel the size and texture took away from the patterned glass in the mosaic. You can also use broken china in different patterns and colors to match your glass.This is the time consuming part of the project if you are using small pieces. I had cuts all over my fingers for days. This glass was a beautiful honey swirl color. I cut at night while the girls were sleeping. I did it in stages so it wasn’t too overwhelming.

Once you have the glass cut and supplies ready then you can really get into the fun part. Designing and laying it out. Here, we  laid the slate and laid the circle pattern for the river rock. We just put the thin-set down in the circle and picked like sized rocks in a pattern to fill it.

You can see it’s coming along, but still a LONG way to go.

I’m not having fun here. My back hurt, my knees hurt, my head hurt. I still had hundreds of purple triangles to lay. But, that step went much faster.

Here is the heart. You can see the beautiful colors in the glass. When the sun hits it, it’s awesome.

Here is the finished product. A little blood, sweat and a few tears.

In the midst of all of this we are counting our blessings and trying to see the blue sky through the clouds.  If you have a job, you are blessed.
